One of the things that attracted me to Jersey City is the art & culture scene. From the outside looking in, I was certain that I would have found open mic venues throughout the city within the first week. However, I quickly learned that I really needed to tap into the underground entertainment scene to find my favorite pastime.
Lucky for me, I got wind of an open mic night after I signed up for the Art House Productions Newsletter. It was as if Art House Productions read the JC Resident list of things to do lodged in my personal journal.
The community and performance venue holds open mic sessions on the first Thursday of every month. A donation of $5 will get you in the door, and you'll be entertained by Jersey City local vocalists, poets, lyricists, and a featured artist.
On Dec. 3, 2015, the featured artist was New York City-based poet, Thomas Fucaloro. I had the opportunity to capture Fucaloro on video, as well as other performers. (See video recap below)
Fucaloro published two books under Three Rooms Press. His latest book, It Starts from the Belly and Blooms, received great reviews. And based on his performance, I predict that his book could be on it's way to a top seller. (Clearly, this is my opinion.)
After speaking with the MC, Carolyn Light, I learned she wished more rappers, hip hop, and rhythm & blues artists would come out and get on the mic to balance out the playing field.
This makes me wonder, where are all the artists? Given the location of the venue, I expected a well rounded representation of entertainers. With that said, I'll take it upon myself to spread the word, because I would like to see more diversity on set. And if the demand is high enough, maybe, just maybe, Art House Productions will have more than one open mic per month.
In the meantime, here's the December 2015 recap.
I'm looking forward to the next open mic at Art House Productions. I may even get up the nerve to showoff my singing skills.
Hope to see there...
